Happy 5th Birthday David!

Dear David,

Tomorrow is your fifth birthday! It doesn't seem like that could be possible. I remember vividly the days leading up to your birth, and how excited Daddy and I were. You were born on a Sunday, and that weekend the weather was beautiful! I had finished working on the Thursday before you were born, and I was so excited to have (I thought!) at least a week off before you came. SURPRISE! I remember going to Target and waddling around the store looking at baby things and buying some books and magazines to read while I waited for you. We got new patio furniture the Friday before you were born, because I was INSISTENT that we get it before you came. Why? Did I think you were going to sit on it?! You have a crazy mama.

Daddy and I spent that Saturday sitting outside enjoying the nice weather. We went to J. Alexander's for dinner Saturday night with Nan and Gramps. I was so excited to eat my Key Lime pie the next day. . . another surprise! Not long after we got home that night, I started to feel different. You weren't due for almost another week, so I really didn't think much about it. I had one big crampy pain, and then my water broke. I was shocked!

After a long, long night and a long, long day the next day, you were finally born a little after 3:00 PM on Sunday March 28. Daddy and I were so happy to see you! You seemed so tiny and sweet. You had a wrinkly face, like a wise little old man. You still act like a wise little old man a lot, but your face isn't wrinkly anymore! It was such a strange feeling for me to be someones mother. To know that your daddy and I were totally responsible for you, and that the decisions we would make would forever in some way mark the course of your life. I have to admit, that's still a strange feeling for me some days.

Today, as you turn five years old, I am so proud of the boy you are. You are a very smart, precocious boy. You have a wit and sense of humor that seems far more mature than your age. You may have started slow and had some stumbling blocks along the way with your speech, but you have more than caught up. You talk all day long! Your questions never cease. Although that sometimes drives me crazy, it also makes me proud. You have an unending desire to learn, and you do so through questioning. You can read and write all of your letters and numbers. You will call out numbers whenever you see them, and your favorite place to do so is at Target in line! You can spell your name, your brothers' names, stop, no, and go. You are very interested right now in, of all things, anatomy. You have a surprising amount of knowledge about the human body for a five year old! If you fall, you say things like, "OUCH! I just hurt mine patella!" You want to know how things work and why. You want to know why and how decisions are made. I often refer to you as the negotiator or counselor, because everything is a debate. You are a feisty one!

You like to tell jokes, play games, and do "tricks". You have an amazing memory, and can pretty much repeat verbatim things that you've heard. You are sly and sneaky sometimes, most often as the ring leader for the schemes you and Henry come up with! Henry is still your best bud, and the two of you are inseparable. You fight like crazy most of the time, but still can't stand to be apart.

Your favorite things to do now are to play outside, play with your trains and cars, play Indiana Jones, and ride your bicycle. You love to play in the sandbox with your trains and cars. You are happiest when you're outside. You love to watch movies with Daddy, especially Indiana Jones, Thomas movies, and Spongebob. You are crazy about Spongebob!

Your favorite foods are: carrots, cheese, cereal, oatmeal, fruit snacks, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, pancakes, waffles, apples, peanut butter sandwiches, pizza, granola bars, and ice cream! We're working on that. . .

I can't believe you'll be starting Kindergarten in the fall. You will love it so much - but right now you are very nervous about it! You are a very considerate boy, and you don't like to hurt people's feelings. You are (generally) polite and kind. You tend to be a bit apprehensive about things, mostly because you think so much about everything. You are such a great boy, and we are so proud of you!

Happy Birthday David!

Love,
Mama

Rainy Day Cheer

My dad surprised me last night by stopping over with an umbrella for me. Why? "Because it's going to rain tomorrow." Um, OK. I have like 6 umbrellas. Clearly I knew something was up by the smirk on his face and him saying, "Just open it!"
This was what I saw when I opened it -- Fenway Park. It was my uncle Craig's umbrella, who I think owned every single Red Sox or Fenway Park item made within the last 20 years. Sure enough, it was raining this morning, and I can't recall ever being so happy to see rain when I stepped outside!

Five for Friday

1. Clearly I've made a mistake parking my car in our driveway. Why? Because it's obviously a bird toilet. Our cars are covered with bird poop. Lovely.

2. Chris is on vacation this week. So are the boys. This will be a good dress rehearsal for him. They're headed to the zoo this morning, so it's looking promising! I, of course, have visions of a summer spent with me working and the rest of my family at home in their underpants watching Spongebob all day long with dirty dishes surrounding them and laundry piling up. Yes, I realize I'm not giving my husband any credit in this evil fantasy, but I like to be pleasantly surprised.

3. Chris and I will be going to Chicago in May for a long weekend to go to my great friend Jenny's wedding. By ourselves. I. Can't. Wait.

4. I am SO glad today is the first day of Spring! We've been starting to have some spring like weather recently, but hopefully it will start to stick around.

5. David's birthday party is next weekend. What have I gotten ready for it so far? That would be nothing. I'm going to get on that when I get out of work this afternoon! And if the invitations I ordered for Henry don't come soon, I'm probably going to have an aneurysm.

It Must be Monday

Why? Because it's 8 o'clock and I've already lost my freaking mind.

It started with Jack having THE most disgusting diaper ever. I seriously think in all of my years of changing diapers it's been the grossest. Let's just say the voluminous amount of blueberries he ate yesterday has been expelled.

Next, we started the barrage of requests for milk, vitamins, pancakes, waffles, cookies, cupcakes, MOREMILK, insert your favorite breakfast demand here, RIGHTNOW. All before my coffee finished brewing.

Then, David and Jack played with some Play Doh and Henry colored while I unloaded the dishwasher. It's always a huge mess to clean up the Play Doh, but I know I'm able to get something accomplished while they're occupied. The mess was enormous.

Finally, while I cleaned up the Play Doh catastrophe, D&H wanted to race their cars in the bathroom on the floor. No problem. It turned into a problem when someone figured out how to circumvent the baby lock on the cabinet and spray Dermamist all over the bathroom. And I do mean ALL OVER. The mirror, vanity, sink, walls, floor, toilet, door, cabinets. . . everywhere. What is Dermamist, you may ask? Essentially liquid petroleum. Awesome. The mirror still looks smear-y, but it's going to have to work.

It's going to be a long day!

Update: It's now 10:30, and I just got out of the shower. I was in our bathroom and heard the water running for what seemed like a long time. I went to the boys' bathroom and found Henry standing on top of the closed toilet, looking into the tank. He had taken the tank cover off, poured a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of body wash into the tank, and was flushing the toilet over and over again to watch it make bubbles. Sometimes I wish running away was a viable option for me. Chris probably has some GPS tracking device on the car so he could find me if I ever tried to!

Cakey

I made this cake the other day for my boss' daughter's birthday. Right, no pressure there! It's not the best picture, as I took it with my phone, but you get the idea!

Five for Friday

1. I'm much less irritated today. I'm sure that makes everyone around me happy. When I'm irritated, I'm not always a pleasant person to be around. Shocking, I know.

2. I don't feel like a three year old should know to say, "Mama, is it OK if I go online for a while?" I'm sorry, you can't spell things other than the names of people in our house and the word no. How the hell do you know about going online? And really the bigger question is who taught him to actually manipulate the computer to get online? Yet he can't undo the baby lock I have on the doors of the computer cabinet to actually turn the computer on. . .

3. I cannot wait until my husband is not working third shift anymore. That, my friends, is consistently the greatest source of my irritation. Yes, it's the shift he's worked for our whole marriage, and yes it could be worse. I realize this. However, it still sucks.

4. I've been up since 3:30 this morning. Jack woke up crying because he peed and has a diaper rash. Or because he has a huge molar still trying to come through his gums. Or because he wanted milk because he kept pointing at his door signing drink and saying, "DIS! DIS!" I stayed up and did two loads of laundry, emptied the dishwasher, and got most of the cake decorated that I have to finish today. Yes, another cake.

5. I. want. warm. weather. Please.

Is There a Geneticist in the House?

Is there a genetic link between men and acting like a moron?

I need to find a lab ASAP and have my boys tested. I just want to know what I'm in for.

#%%#@!$^*&!!!!!!!!!!

Do you ever have one of those days when EVERYTHING irritates you? I mean EVERYFREAKINGTHING?!

Me too. It's today.

Thank You!

Thank you Julie for watching my monkey boys today! They had a great time, and were pooped when we got home. I owe you!

Can You See This?

I've had a couple of people tell me recently that all they can see is the background of my blog, not the content. Can you see it?

Rumor Has It

The newest rumor (from a reliable source. . . Chris' boss) is that he will probably not have a job as of early April. Although this was something we planned for, we already know the terms of his severance package, we're excited for him to go to school, etc., it still makes me a little nervous! He's very excited though, which makes me happy.

And could someone please let Jack know that we sleep at night. We don't play or socialize. 2:15 AM is his new time to wake up. He then proceeds to go back to sleep in 20 minute increments. I don't like that. Last night I indulged him once with a quick back rub, a new paci, and then I was back to my bed. He woke up again about 30 minutes later, I gave him his paci, went to my room and turned the monitor off. I hate to do that, but he's not going to die crying, and there was nothing wrong with him. This is the third night in a row of being up pretty much all night, then going to work. It's like having a newborn all over again. If I don't get more than 4 hours of sleep, there MIGHT be something wrong with him!!

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

Why, why, why. . .

did Jack get up at 2:30 this morning? For. the. day. I went to bed at 10. This is a reasonable bedtime for a work night. Not when I have to get up with him at 2:30.

I could have been persuaded to understand what drives people to shake a baby.

Tickling.
